A new concept of motorcycle against a spot fire in a tunnel

This solution is still unusual and certainly a concept to be evaluated. It has the merit of addressing dangerous situations: fire or accidents in tunnels in operation. But this motorcycle can undoubtedly concern accidents in tunnels under construction.

A new motorcycle concept

The Tunnel Keeper Concept Bike is a futuristic style vehicle, straight out of a manga. Of course, it refers to Kaneda’s motorcycle in Akira. But instead of riding through the streets of Neo-Tokyo, the Tunnel Keeper motorcycle aims to save lives (in case of a traffic accident or fire in a tunnel).

The Tunnel Keeper motorcycle is a single-seater (car seat, steering wheel, windshield). It is also a motorcycle (two-wheeler, lengthwise design). It can accommodate various modules and accessories including an emergency box (supplies, first aid) and a portable stretcher. A LED lighting system spread over the vehicle ensures maximum visibility in a tunnel.

A motorcycle with dedicated equipment

The concept is understood as a complete system, designed for optimal efficiency in a tunnel in case of emergency. The motorcycle is electric. It is recharged at a station. As soon as the need arises, emergency operators can use it.

It is equipped with a water fog system and compressed air foam equipment to extinguish flames. It also has a smoke dissipator to clear the way and gain visibility as rescue workers progress through the tunnel.

The motorcycle can be connected directly to the fire hydrants inside the tunnel. In addition, it has its own tank of fire-fighting foam to ensure a certain amount of autonomy.

The Tunnel Keeper can also be equipped with a fog system. This system traps harmful particles in suspension and brings them to the ground, thus reducing the risk of asphyxiation.

A new relief concept

This new futuristic motorcycle concept is the brainchild of Taiwanese designer Syu Wei Chen, who won the “Student Notable Transportation Award.” He not only created this new equipment but also designed a complete strategy and process on how the Tunnel Keeper would be used in an emergency.

This is a development that could be of interest to many tunnel safety specialists.
