ITA
ITA-AITES (International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association) is the leading international organisation in the field of underground works and the use of underground space.
It brings together national associations, experts, companies, institutions and research organisations from around the world to promote the sustainable development of underground infrastructure, the exchange of knowledge, and best technical practices.
Established in 1974 under the auspices of the United Nations, ITA-AITES plays a major role in disseminating knowledge, organising international congresses (ITA WTC – ITA World Tunnel Congress), producing technical recommendations, and promoting underground space as a strategic resource.
AFTES, as the French national association, is a member of ITA-AITES and, in this capacity, represents the French underground works community at the international level and actively participates in the association’s activities.
- The participation of its members in technical committees (Working Groups),
- Contributions to the drafting of international recommendations and reports,
- Representation of France on the ITA-AITES Executive Council,
- Promotion of international initiatives within the French community,
- Participation in international congresses and events.
AFTES thus acts as an interface between the French underground works community and the international community, promoting the dissemination of knowledge, feedback from experience, and international cooperation.

Working Groups and Committees
In 2024, a commitment was made to our Technical Committee to promote our work and recommendations internationally. This commitment was fulfilled through the presentation of our recommendations during the technical sessions of the World Tunnel Congress (WTC).
The AFTES is also highly active within the governance bodies of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA). The ITA’s annual congress is a key event, bringing together the various working groups and committees, as well as hosting the General Assembly, during which the Association’s future activities and priorities are determined.
With the objective of promoting and showcasing our technical work internationally, AFTES actively contributes to these working groups. In close coordination with our Technical Committee, we have identified the corresponding ITA working groups that mirror those of AFTES, ensuring effective and appropriate representation within the international framework.
